I recently wrote an article about the pros/cons of sharpening your skates at different cup depths and how trying something new can affect your skating technique.
You can read that article here.
How do the NHL pros sharpen their skates?
It is not easy to find information regarding the players' own preferences, but there is little to be learned out there. Most of it is a few years old information, but it doesn't matter that much as professionals very rarely or rather never change the depth of the bowl as they are very used to what they have used for many years.
Bowl depth on slightly mixed players:
-
Alex Ovechkin – 1/2″- 13mm
-
Wayne Gretzky - 1/2" - 13mm
-
Joe Sakic – 5/8″ - 16mm
-
Paul Coffey – 1 to 2″ - 25mm +
- Mark Messier - 1" - 25mm
Pittsburgh Penguins 2015/2016:
- Marc-Andre Fleury – 9/16" - 14mm
- Evgeni Malkin – 1/2″ - 13mm
- Sidney Crosby - 9/16" - 14mm
- Kris Letang - 1/2" - 13 mm
- Phil Kessel - 3/8" - 10mm
- Carl Hagelin - 3/4 - 19 mm
- Patric Hörnqvist - 1 1/8 - 28.5 mm
- Oskar Sundqvist - 1/2" - 13 mm
Chicago Blackhawks 2012/2013:
- Jonathan Toews - 3/4" - 19mm
- Patrick Kane - 9/16" - 14mm
- Patrick Sharp - 5/8" - 16mm
